A refractor telescope uses lenses as its primary optical elements to collect and focus light. Its imaging performance depends on the design, material, precision, and coatings of several key optical components.
1. Objective Lenses
The objective lens is the core component of a refractor telescope. Achromatic objectives typically combine crown and flint glass to reduce chromatic aberration at an affordable cost. APO objectives use specialized ED glass or fluorite to achieve better color correction, making them popular in high-resolution observation and astrophotography. Their tighter manufacturing tolerances and more complex assembly can also increase production costs.
2. Field Flatteners and Eyepieces
Field flatteners correct field curvature, helping maintain sharp star images across the camera sensor. Eyepieces use multiple lens elements to control aberrations and provide a clear, comfortable viewing experience. These components are particularly important in astrophotography and high-magnification observation.
3. Anti-Reflection Coatings
Broadband anti-reflection (BBAR) coatings reduce surface reflections, improve light transmission, and minimize unwanted ghost images. Coating performance is especially important in multi-element optical systems, where light passes through several lens surfaces.
At Betensh Optics, we manufacture custom optical lenses and coated components according to customer drawings and specifications, supporting the development of refractor telescopes and other precision optical systems.
